UTAWIT 2012 – A Melody of Unity

UTAWIT is a prestigious singing competition in Japan inside the Philippine community. UTA (Japanese) and AWIT (Tagalog) both means “Song”. UTAWIT was launched in 2004 with the collaboration of Jeepney Press, Samahang Pilipino and Teatro Kanto. This event is probably one of the most anticipated and outstanding among others that happens annually.
At first, UTAWIT only had Filipino contestants singing original Pinoy music. Eventually, as the grand event grow and expanded, Japanese with Filipino descent were also allowed to join the competition. The Kanto region is its first ground of searching for great talents and for few years they only concentrated the search in it. In the long run, they stretched their auditions into Regional and National deliberation from different area of Japan aside from Tokyo. Nowadays, the competition allows pure Japanese to join the contest. This also became a scope of greater friendship and unity with Japanese and Filipinos in Japan.
Filipinos are known for great singers and performers. Back in the Philippines, amateur or prominent singing competition is such a great entertainment to us. We have a high respect with those kinds of events. There are a lot of great Filipino singers not just in the Philippines but in any corner of the world. Even in Japan, we cannot hide the fact that 4 out of 5 Filipinos can sing nor is a good singer. This also paved the way of deeper harmony and unison within the Philippine community. We meet new people and friends. We discover great talents. We gain more connections and networks that would mostly boost the credibility and respect for the Filipinos. Their objectives are to recognize and promote Filipinos as mainstream performers in Japan, to enrich cross-cultural appreciation among Japanese and Filipinos and generate financial sources for developmental activities.

Here are the schedule dates; Tokyo (July 8 & Aug. 19), Yamagata (July 15), Kagawa (July 28), Okayama (July 29), Kyoto (Aug. 5), Fukuoka (Sept. 2), Nagoya (Sept. 9), Oita (Sept. 16), Ibaraki (Sept. 16), Hokkaido (Sept. 17), Shizuoka (Sept. 23), Nagano (Sept. 30) and Kanagawa (Sept. 30).
