The Reason Why the Period of Stay was Shortened

QUESTION

I have been residing for about 12 years after I was given the Immigration status “Engineer” and the period of stay “one year” at the time when I landed on July 11, 2008. The period of stay was “one year” for three years by 2011, then it was elongated and granted from “1 year” to “3 years” in the same year. And it was elongated “5 years” in 2014. However, it was shortened from “5 years” to “3 years” in 2019. I have not committed a crime and have been achieving tax liability. Why was the period of stay shortened? Please teach me the reason for it.

ANSWER

I think that it will be your “nonfeasance of a report” when I consider from your Immigration status “Engineer”. That is, we can find out it in item No. 2, Article 19-16 of Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law. It specified as follows. “…those who were given the Immigration status・・・Engineer・・・have to submit the notice to the nearby Immigration Bureau within 14 days from the day which it occurred, such as when the name or location of the organization changes, when the organization disappears, when the employment agreement with the organization terminates, or when a new contract is concluded”. While those who have neglected this notification are punished based on the Law as those who violated laws and  ordinances, the shortening of a period of stay is one of punishment. On the other hand, even if a period of stay was shortened, you are seldom worried since it is possible to reside in Japan and to continue your activities as usual. For your information, when you would have any changes, it is the best way to inquire how you should do it to the Immigration Bureau from now on.
