NBI Nabs 20 Foreigners

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) nabbed more than 20 foreigners for their alleged involvement in international telephone fraud and other cybercrimes.

The suspects, most of which hailed from Taiwan, were arrested by the bureau agents in a raid they conducted at the houses of Shih Liang Shia located at Nos. 16-10 and 16-12, Grande Street, Riverside Subdivision, Barangay Anunas, Friendship, Angeles City in Pampanga.

NBI-National Capital Region (NBI-NCR) Regional Director Lawyer George Jularbal  said the operation is an ongoing joint effort between Taiwan ang the Philippines against cross-border crimes.

A report submitted to NBI officer-in-charge Nonnatus Caesar Rojas showed that the operation, which was carried out last Saturday, stemmed from the request of a certain  Beny Chen, a senior assistant of the Taipei Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) informing the bureau that their Ministry of Justice in Taiwan received an intelligence report that telephone fraud activities being conducted by suspected Taiwanese syndicates in the country.  The information passed on to the bureau said that the said syndicates were involved in the swindling ofTaiwanese and Chinese residents by introducing themselves as judge, prosecutor or a police officer to their prospective victims in mainland China and Taiwan.

The suspects, which were now detained at the NBI jail under the bureau’s Security and Management Division, were charged with violation of Republic Act 8484 or Access Devices Regulation Act .-(Manila Bulletin)
