QUESTION:

I have a Japanese father and a Filipino mother. My parents were not married, and I was born and raised by my mother alone here in the Philippines. After graduating from college, I really want to get a better opportunity, so I was thinking of applying for a “Child of Japanese National Visa.” I have visited Japan three months ago and met with my father, together with my mother (we just visited my father without him knowing since it seems like he doesn’t want to meet me, or take responsibility. We were accompanied by one of his ex-employees that’s why we got a chance to go to my father). I can’t find any information on how to get a “Child of Japanese National Visa” here in the Philippines. I want to live and work in Japan for long term.

My only concern is how can I apply for the “Child of Japanese National Visa?” And what if he doesn’t acknowledge me? I really want to work and live in Japan to help my mother after all she’s been through and helping me finish college. Thank you.

– Christopher

ANSWER:

As you quite understand, you must be recognized by your Japanese father based on the Japanese law in order to acquire the visa “Spouse/Child of Japanese national.” According to the Japanese law, even if you would be over 20 years old (adult), you would be accepted entrance to Japan and the residence in Japan if the paternal relations with your father would be built after your Japanese father would accept the cognition. That is, there is no way from now on, which you would be accepted his cognition, while you would carry out the negotiation with him repeatedly.
