Philippine Embassy Tokyo Celebrates International Women’s Day

Last March 8, 2017, the Philippine Embassy Tokyo celebrated the International Women’s Day, they opened a Photo Exhibit featuring photos of renowned Street and Documentary Photographer, Ms. Zyxa Cruz Bacani. The exhibit runs from March 8 to 31, 2017 at the Embassy Siazon Hall.

Ms. Bacani worked as a domestic worker in Hong Kong for almost a decade and used photography to raise awareness about under-reported stories, particularly migrants and human rights issues. She has won numerous awards in photography worldwide and has been featured in New York Times Lens Blog, CNN and other international media publications.

Consistent with the 2017 themes “Be Bold for Change” and “We Make Change Work for Women,” the Embassy commemoration of International Women’s Day focused on women’s achievements and provided a platform for Embassy personnel and guests to share insights in further empowering women and strengthening gender equality in our society.

In this remarks, Charge d’Affaires, a.i. Eduardo Martin R. Meñez cited that the Philippines is one of the best performing countries in advancing gender equality, as evidenced by the number of women holding important positions in the business sector and in the government. In the Department of Foreign Affairs alone, majority of the members of the Foreign Service corps are now women, and this percentage reflects women empowerment as more and more women are inspired to enter the field of diplomacy. This gender parity is also seen in the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo itself.
