Ryuichi Sakamoto to Receive 30th Anniversary TIFF SAMURAI Award

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2017 SAMURAI Award will be acclaimed musician Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor), winner of BAFTA and Oscar Awards for his film music. The SAMURAI Award, now in its fourth year, commends achievements by veteran filmmakers and creators who continue to create groundbreaking work that carves paths to a new era in cinema.

It is with great pleasure that we also announce TIFF will be hosting several free talk events aimed at young film fans and next-generation filmmakers, as part of TIFF’s vision to engage with youth. Speakers will be internationally renowned figures, including SAMURAI Award recipient Ryuichi Sakamoto and acclaimed filmmakers Brillante Ma Mendoza, Naomi Kawase, and Fumihiko Sori.

Winner of many international awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Score, and always on the cutting edge, musician Ryuichi Sakamoto speaks about his career and approach to scoring for the screen.

Brillante Ma Mendoza on Working with Actors (tentative)

Brillante Ma Mendoza, the director who is credited with leading Filipino cinema into its ripe Third Golden Age, talks about his method for working with actors.

Naomi Kawase Special Talk Event (tentative)

Saturday, October 28
Doors open at 1:00 p.m. / Session starts at 2:00 p.m.
A master class with director Naomi Kawase, who is active in mentoring the next generation of filmmakers. The session will include a special screening of The Wolves of the East, for which Kawase served as executive producer, and a talk session with star Tatsuya Fuji.

Fumihiko Sori Fullmetal Alchemist Talk Event

Monday, October 30
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. / Session starts at 7:00 p.m.
A special event to commemorate the December 1 release of Fullmetal Alchemist, director Fumihiko Sori will talk about how he adapted the international megahit manga series, which sold 70 million copies worldwide and was considered impossible to film in live-action. What thrilling new visual world and cinematic experience can fans expect?
