QUESTION

I was born in the Philippines. My father is Japanese and my mother is Filipino. They never got married in the Philippines, but he recognized me as his son based on the Philippines Law. He has signed on my birth certificate (Philippines only), but not in legal documents in Japan. I have constant communication with my father up to now.

Current scenario, I had a chance to travel to Japan few years ago. Last January is my fourth time visiting Japan under Temporary Visitor visa. Now, my father is willing to recognize me legally and register to his koseki-tohon based on Japanese Law. What are the chances and possibilities that my father can do for me to register in his koseki-tohon? How is the process and how long can it be done?

ANSWER

The recognition (cognition) is supposed to be carried out by a Japanese father who would visit to municipal office, and materialize by submitting required documents to the office. If the documents are complete, it will be materialized in one day. However, the examination will be performed strictly, since fake cognition cases are currently rampant. If your Japanese father would recognize you and complete it record on koseki-tohon, you can enter a country and reside in Japan with an immigration status of “Spouse/Child of Japanese national” based on the Japanese Immigration Act.
